GOP-Led Investigation Claims FDA Hid COVID Vaccine Side Effects, Democrats Push Back Hard

The Homeland Security subcommittee on investigations, chaired by Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisconsin), has released a controversial report alleging that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under President Biden concealed data on adverse effects from COVID vaccines. The report claims that the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) failed to accurately capture negative side effects from mRNA vaccines, leading to public misinformation.

Sen. Johnson insists the government has not been honest with Americans about vaccine risks. “The bottom line is all about hindsight that you need to expose what happens so it never happens again,” he told Medill News Services. The report specifically accuses FDA officials of ignoring warnings from Dr. Ana Szarfman, a senior medical officer who identified flaws in the agency’s safety data mining methods. According to the report, these methodological failures masked dozens of statistically significant adverse events, including Bell’s Palsy, pulmonary infarctions, and myocarditis.

However, the scientific community and Democratic lawmakers sharply reject these claims. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Connecticut), the committee’s top Democrat, called the report a politically charged attack on one of the most important public health achievements in recent history. “Vaccine opponents turned one of the greatest scientific breakthroughs in our country's history into fodder for political attack,” Blumenthal said. He emphasized that serious side effects were neither ignored nor covered up and that the benefits of vaccination far outweigh the risks.

Experts note that myocarditis, which the report highlights as a major concern, typically resolves with partial or full recovery, further undercutting the report’s alarmist tone. Blumenthal added, “Scientists who were actively looking for ways to detect side effects support a predetermined and flawed thesis that COVID-19 vaccines have done more harm than good. That’s not the scientific method.”

The report also features comments from Dr. Karl Jablonowski of Children’s Health Defense, an organization founded by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. known for its anti-vaccine stance. Jablonowski criticized the government’s management of VAERS, claiming a lack of outside scientific guidance and insufficient research on vaccine risks. He lamented that the Health and Human Services secretary did not mobilize a large team of data experts to address these issues.

Meanwhile, Maria Young, a severe COVID-19 survivor and vaccine advocate, highlighted the need to center the voices of victims in the vaccine conversation. “What we’re losing here is the victims,” Young told Medill News Services. “I think that's what we need to remember, what COVID left us with afterwards.”

This report and its hearing come amid ongoing political battles over public health policy and vaccine mandates. While Republicans push narratives of cover-ups and hidden dangers, Democrats and public health officials continue to stress the overwhelming evidence supporting vaccine safety and efficacy. As misinformation circulates, the stakes remain high for public trust in science and government accountability.
