GOP Rep Barry Moore Pushes Voter ID Law, Claims Fraud Is ‘Not As Rampant’ In Alabama While Citing Debunked Election Lies
Alabama Republican Rep Barry Moore is pushing the Senate to pass the SAVE Act, demanding strict voter ID and an end to mail-in voting based on false claims of widespread fraud. Yet he admits Alabama’s own voter fraud is limited — exposing the hypocrisy behind nationwide election denialism.
Alabama Republican Rep Barry Moore is doubling down on voter suppression tactics, urging the U.S. Senate to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act — even if it means ending the filibuster. The bill would impose strict voter ID requirements and effectively end mail-in voting nationwide under the guise of combating voter fraud.
In an interview with Nexstar Media’s Reshad Hudson, Moore claimed the bill is popular across party lines because “80/20%” of voters agree that only U.S. citizens should vote in U.S. elections. But the real motive is clear: voter ID laws have long been proven to disproportionately suppress turnout among marginalized communities, while providing no meaningful boost to election integrity.
Moore cited the 2020 Georgia election as an example of mail-in ballot fraud, alleging “three hundred something thousand ballots” were mailed to a single area and counted late — a misleading claim echoing debunked conspiracy theories pushed by Trump supporters. He insisted that “a voter ID is not asking too much,” ignoring the fact that voter fraud is vanishingly rare and that voter ID laws create barriers for millions of eligible voters.
Ironically, Moore conceded that Alabama itself has not experienced “rampant” voter fraud, saying, “We did the voter ID stuff in Alabama… We didn’t see the rampant fraud that we’ve seen in other areas of the country.” This admission undercuts the very rationale for the SAVE Act and exposes the cynical political play at work: stoking baseless fraud fears to justify restrictive voting laws.
Moore also advocated ending the Senate filibuster to force a vote on the bill, warning that if Republicans don’t act now, Democrats will “end the filibuster the next chance they get.” This highlights how the filibuster is being weaponized as a political bargaining chip rather than a tool for bipartisan deliberation.
Moore’s push fits into a broader pattern of Republican-led efforts to restrict voting access under the false pretense of election security. These efforts threaten to undermine democracy by disenfranchising millions of voters — all while relying on debunked claims of widespread fraud.
At a time when election denialism continues to fuel authoritarian ambitions, Moore’s stance is another reminder that voter suppression is not about protecting democracy but about consolidating partisan power. We need to call out these lies and fight back against the ongoing assault on voting rights.
