Commenting on the possibility that Parliament might adopt a resolution to require of the Cabinet to move a bill ratifying Bulgaria’s accession to President Trump's Board of Peace, caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov said at a news conference on Friday that, if such a decision is adopted, the government will refer the matter to the Constitutional Court. Gurov said it should be clear that the caretaker cabinet will not be guided by such actions.
According to the caretaker PM, there is “very clear case law of the Constitutional Court showing that the National Assembly of Bulgaria cannot impose such obligations on the caretaker government".
Gurov also said that political parties appeared to be entering the election campaign, adding that he understood how "certain politicians were trying to trade national interests for their position on the Magnitsky list".
A draft resolution requiring the Council of Ministers to present a ratification bill on Bulgaria's accession to the Board of Peace in Parliament, was submitted on Wednesday by MRF-New Beginning, whose leader Delyan Peevski was designated under the Global Magnitsky Act in 2021 for "corruption, using influence peddling and bribes to protect himself from public scrutiny and exert control over key institutions and sectors in Bulgarian society". Peevski is challenging the designation in a US court. His lawyers argue that there is no evidence of any wrongdoing by their client.
Earlier in the day, Parliament’s agenda included a draft decision obliging the Council of Ministers of Bulgaria to submit a bill ratifying the agreement on Bulgaria’s accession to the Board of Peace.
