The fragile ceasefire brokered to end the month-long conflict involving Israel, Iran, and Hezbollah is showing cracks as Hezbollah fired a missile at Ashdod port in Israel. This attack highlights the tenuous hold on peace in the region and raises urgent questions about the effectiveness of diplomatic efforts to halt the violence.

India, a troop contributor to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), expressed serious concern over the mounting civilian toll in Lebanon. Speaking at an inter-ministerial briefing in New Delhi, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the situation as “very disturbing.” He emphasized India's longstanding commitment to peace and stability in the region and noted that approximately 1,000 Indian nationals currently reside in Lebanon.

Jaiswal stated, “We are deeply concerned by reports of a large number of civilian casualties that have been reported in Lebanon. As a troop-contributing country to UNIFIL—which is invested in Lebanon's peace and security—the trajectory of events is very disturbing.”

The ongoing strikes by Israel, despite the ceasefire, and retaliatory attacks by Hezbollah risk dragging the region back into full-scale war. The continued violence also serves as a grim reminder of how foreign conflicts are being manipulated and exacerbated by regional powers, including Iran, whose proxy Hezbollah remains a key player.

This escalation threatens not only regional stability but also the safety of civilians caught in the crossfire. The international community’s failure to enforce the ceasefire and protect noncombatants exposes the limits of diplomatic interventions and underscores the urgent need for accountability and renewed efforts to de-escalate the conflict.

As the ceasefire falters, the Trump administration’s previous policies of military escalation and sanctions in the region come under renewed scrutiny for having contributed to a cycle of violence and instability. The missile strike on Ashdod port is the latest flashpoint in a conflict that continues to endanger lives and undermine prospects for lasting peace.
