Hochul Demands ICE Agent Who Killed Renee Good Be Kept Out of New York

New York Governor Kathy Hochul is drawing a firm line against the federal government’s handling of ICE agent Jonathan Ross, who killed Renee Nicole Good during a January 2026 immigration raid in Minneapolis. Reports that Ross has been quietly reassigned to an undisclosed state sparked Hochul’s demand that he be kept out of New York altogether.

In a sharply worded letter to Tom Homan, the federal border czar, Hochul condemned the reported “reassignment” of Ross as a failure of accountability. “Reassigning Jonathan Ross is not accountability,” Hochul tweeted. “If he’s in New York, he must be removed immediately.” She called for an independent probe into Ross’s actions and insisted that agents involved in deadly incidents cannot be shuffled around the country without facing consequences.

Renee Good, a 37-year-old unarmed mother, was shot three times in the head and arm by Ross on January 7, 2026, after she tried to drive away from an immigration raid rather than exit her vehicle as ordered. Video footage of the shooting sparked outrage, but federal officials quickly cleared Ross, claiming no civil rights violations. Meanwhile, Minnesota state authorities say they have been blocked from investigating the case or collecting evidence by federal agents.

Hochul also referenced the killing of Alex Pretti, another U.S. citizen who died during protests against the immigration crackdown in Minnesota. Like Good’s case, the officers involved in Pretti’s death have faced no legal repercussions, underscoring a pattern of impunity for federal agents in deadly confrontations.

The New York governor and Democratic lawmakers are simultaneously advancing sanctuary-style legislation to limit federal immigration enforcement in the state. Hochul has met with Homan in an effort to prevent a Minnesota-style crackdown from taking root in New York.
