Homeland Security Secretary's Praise For Unpaid TSA Employees Backfires As Americans ...

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem faced significant public backlash after posting social media videos praising unpaid TSA workers for their patriotism and professionalism during a partial government shutdown affecting the Department of Homeland Security. The funding lapse began February 14 after Democratic lawmakers and the White House failed to reach an agreement over proposed ICE reforms, leaving TSA agents working without pay while ICE remained funded through Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill." Noem urged Americans to contact their congressional representatives to resolve the impasse, but her posts drew widespread criticism, with many commenters calling for ICE to be defunded instead. The shutdown also prompted the temporary suspension of TSA PreCheck and Global Entry services, with the PreCheck suspension later reversed following public backlash.

Homeland Security Secretary's Praise For Unpaid TSA Employees Backfires As Americans ...

When Kristi Noem, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), praised the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers through a social media post for their "exemplary professionalism and service," ordinary days would have made it empathetic for many Americans, but it sharply misfired instead. The ongoing partial government shutdown has hit DHS, and TSA workers are impacted by the department's depleted funding.

In her social media posts, Noem celebrates the unpaid TSA workers for their dedication amid the shutdown. She's seen talking to a TSA agent about not getting paid after Democratic lawmakers failed to reach a deal with the White House over the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) reforms.

In the comments, the public says, "abolish ICE," following the deadly immigration crackdown, which has drawn an overwhelming wave of backlash from Americans. ICE remains funded, as it was secured last year in Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill, while TSA gets the blow.

Homeland Security Secretary Endures Criticism On Social Media Over Unpaid TSA Workers

Praising the Transportation Security Administration workers for their dedication even without getting a paycheck was poorly received by the public, and Secretary Noem abruptly became a flashpoint for many Americans who voiced their discontent with federal immigration policy.

As seen in both Facebook and Instagram videos posted by Noem, she spoke with a TSA worker at an airport checkpoint in Washington, who didn't get his paycheck after the partial government shutdown hit DHS, particularly the TSA agents. The worker said he's getting financial help from his family while working without pay.

Noem said that the TSA workers may have to wait for a month or two (depending on the deal that Democratic lawmakers reach with the White House) until they get paid.

"Our TSA officers across the nation are providing exemplary professionalism and service as Democrats continue to withhold their paychecks. The men and women of TSA are keeping this country moving and secure despite financial hardship. I am so proud of these patriots," reads Noem's social media post.

Noem also asked Americans to call the members of their congress to "tell them to open DHS and get these men and women paid." But as the DHS Secretary celebrated the "unpaid heroes" in TSA, she was also met with criticism from the public, with many saying, "abolish and defund ICE," which started to fill the comment threads both on Facebook and Instagram.

The DHS funding lapsed on February 14, after Democratic lawmakers and the White House failed to agree on ICE reforms during their operations, including:

- Banning the face masks of ICE agents - Displaying or using their IDs - Using body cameras

The Democrats have previously warned that they're not approving more funding for the DHS if the Trump administration continues with its aggressive immigration policies that have killed a few U.S. citizens, including Renee Good and Alex Pretti, in the Twin Cities.

Many Americans commented on Noem's post about defunding ICE, asking her to stop blaming the other party and negotiate instead about the ICE reforms that Democrats proposed.

Just like the previous government shutdown, which lasted 43 days—the longest in U.S. history, TSA workers are forced to work without pay, and they may have to endure the same situation until lawmakers return from their break, and as soon as they reach a deal about ICE reforms.

Americans React To Homeland Security Secretary's Celebration Of Unpaid TSA Workers

When the partial government shutdown hit the DHS, experts warned travelers to arrive early at the airports to allow more time for TSA security checks, as it was expected that there would be increased absenteeism, causing disruptions to security screenings, especially since many TSA agents only get a partial, reduced, or zero paycheck while being required to continue working.

Secretary Noem did "celebrate" the TSA patriots for doing their job despite being unpaid due to the shutdown, but it also didn't end well for her, as many Americans scrutinize her and the Trump administration for their aggressive policies.

On Instagram, one individual wrote with the hashtag "abolish ICE," while another commented, "Their paychecks are without because we, the people, the 270,000,000 who DID NOT vote for Trumpism, have insisted that both parties in both houses defund ICE because of your and Miller's horrific management," then went on to say that both and Noem and Miller should resign "and let people with leadership skills and acknowledge of and respect for our constitution take over."

The partial government shutdown has hit its second week without a resolution between lawmakers and the White House. While ICE isn't affected by the funding lapse after it was secured in One Big Beautiful Bill, it's the TSA that takes the blow.

Due to the budget fallout, the DHS had to suspend the TSA PreCheck and Global Entry, but was also met with disapproval from the public, especially Americans who had prepaid for the service for faster check-ins.

The DHS abruptly canceled the suspension of TSA PreCheck, following the backlash, but Global Entry remains paused.

Over on Facebook, many Americans share the same sentiment, asking Noem and the Trump administration to defund ICE and focus on TSA instead. One person also said that the shutdown is on the president, "because, if you remember, Donald Trump said a few years ago that if anyone was to get blamed for any government shutdown, it should be the president."

Another individual also felt Noem's praise for the TSA worker was a "double whammy," as the agent looked Hispanic, saying, "Hilarious! Considering this man is exactly who your ICE agents target!"

Here's What Others Have To Say About Noem's Commendation Of Unpaid TSA Workers

Secretary Noem's commendation of the unpaid TSA workers emphasized the USA's widening political chasm over shutdown politics—while she and her fellow Republicans blame Democratic lawmakers for their failure to fund the DHS, especially the TSA, critics highlighted ICE reforms, which Democrats continue to press on, but have yet to find a resolution with the White House.
