Hondurasgate Exposes US and Israeli Plot to Spread Fake News and Destabilize Latin America’s Left

New leaks published by Diario Red en América Latina and the investigative website Hondurasgate have uncovered a brazen plot involving former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, pardoned by Donald Trump despite drug trafficking convictions, to destabilize left-wing governments in Latin America through disinformation campaigns. Audio recordings from early 2026 reveal Hernández coordinating with Honduran President Nasry Asfura and Vice President María Antonieta Mejía to establish a US-based digital journalism operation designed to spread fake news targeting progressive leaders such as Mexico’s Claudia Sheinbaum, Colombia’s Gustavo Petro, and Brazil’s Lula da Silva.

In one conversation, Hernández requests $150,000 to rent an apartment in the United States to serve as the base for this “information cell,” emphasizing the need for secrecy and distance from Honduras to avoid detection. He boasts of a successful call with Argentine far-right President Javier Milei, who is reportedly contributing $350,000 to the effort. Hernández also hints at additional financial support from an unnamed Mexican ally, aiming to hit governments that challenge right-wing interests in the region.

Hernández’s plan, according to the recordings, is explicitly about “attacking and eradicating the cancer of the left” in Honduras and across Latin America. Asfura agrees to funnel funds from Honduran public resources to sustain the operation and even suggests providing Hernández with additional money for personal survival. The recordings were verified using advanced forensic voice analysis tools, lending credibility to the explosive claims.

Mexico’s Sheinbaum responded to the revelations by condemning the interference, framing it as part of a broader right-wing network linked to Spain, the US, and Argentina that seeks to undermine Mexican humanism and democratic sovereignty. She dismissed the smear campaign as ultimately ineffective, urging resilience and adherence to constitutional principles.

This scandal, dubbed Hondurasgate, exposes a disturbing new chapter in US-backed authoritarian tactics—weaponizing misinformation and foreign allies to destabilize democratically elected governments that challenge entrenched power structures. The involvement of Trump, Milei, and Israeli interests signals a transnational effort to reverse progressive gains in Latin America by any means necessary.

As the recordings continue to surface, the implications for democracy in the region are grave. Hondurasgate is not just about one country’s corruption; it’s about a coordinated assault on truth, sovereignty, and the will of the people across multiple nations. We will be watching closely as this story unfolds.
