House Democrats Sound Alarm on Trump’s Election Interference in San Francisco Shadow Hearing
House Democrats convened a “shadow” hearing in San Francisco to expose President Trump’s ongoing efforts to undermine the November midterms through baseless fraud claims, voter suppression tactics, and illegal meddling in election administration. They urged voters to trust local officials and vote early, warning that Trump’s attacks threaten the very foundation of American democracy.
House Democrats held a hard-hitting “shadow” hearing in San Francisco this week to confront what they call President Donald Trump’s unprecedented attempts to sabotage the upcoming midterm elections. Led by Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Joe Morelle, the forum aimed to reassure Americans that free and fair elections remain intact despite the Trump administration’s relentless assault on voting rights and election integrity.
“As I travel the country, the biggest question I get is, ‘Is there going to be an election?’” Pelosi said after the 90-minute event. “Of course there is. We have had elections even during the Civil War. But we are bracing for a wave of challenges now.”
Those challenges include Trump’s repeatedly debunked claims of widespread voter fraud, his threats to deploy immigration and federal law enforcement agents to polling places, and executive orders designed to restrict mail-in voting. The administration is also pushing legislation like the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, which would force voters to prove citizenship in person and submit state voter rolls to the Department of Homeland Security—moves experts say will disenfranchise millions without improving security.
Experts at the hearing, including UC Law professor Rory Little and former California Secretary of State Kevin Shelley, called out these efforts as illegal and harmful. Little dismissed the SAVE Act as a “shameful” attempt to suppress votes, noting that non-citizen voting and mail ballot fraud are virtually nonexistent problems.
Brian Renfroe, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers, expressed concern over a Trump executive order that would have the U.S. Postal Service control mail-in ballot envelopes and refuse delivery unless voters appear on a federally created eligibility list. The order is currently tied up in court, but the confusion and intimidation it sows among voters are already evident.
“Our job is not to tip the scales for Democrats,” Morelle said. “It’s to make sure the American people have their voice heard. The President is afraid of the verdict voters will deliver, so he’s trying to change the rules to stop people from casting their ballots.”
The San Francisco hearing followed a similar event in Los Angeles earlier in the week. Both are “shadow” hearings because Republicans refuse to hold official congressional hearings on the issue, leaving Democrats to fill the void in defending democracy.
This aggressive pushback against Trump’s election interference is critical as voters head to the polls this fall. The message from Pelosi and her colleagues is clear: do not buy into the lies, trust your local election officials, and vote as early as possible to protect your right to be heard.
