How the Roberts Court Rigged Democracy for Billionaire Rule

The Supreme Court’s transformation into a tool for billionaire power grabs is no accident — it’s a meticulously engineered coup against democracy. Legal activist Lisa Graves lays bare this assault in her new book Without Precedent, revealing how the Roberts Court has systematically dismantled democratic norms to benefit the wealthiest few.

It all started with the stolen 2000 election. In Bush v. Gore, five Republican justices — including Clarence Thomas, who shockingly refused to recuse himself despite his wife Ginni Thomas’s deep ties to the Heritage Foundation’s political operatives — halted Florida’s recount. This partisan power grab handed George W. Bush the presidency, despite evidence that Al Gore had actually won the state. The fallout was immediate: Ginni Thomas was rewarded with a lucrative Heritage Foundation promotion, cementing a cozy relationship between the court and right-wing political operatives.

This decision set a dangerous precedent for the Court’s future. When John Roberts became Chief Justice and Samuel Alito joined the bench, the stage was set for Citizens United. This 5-4 ruling, with Clarence Thomas again the crucial fifth vote, unleashed a flood of secret billionaire cash into elections by declaring that money equals speech under the First Amendment. Thomas even wrote a concurring opinion opposing disclosure of donors — conveniently ignoring the massive financial ties between his wife and billionaire Harlan Crowe, who funded groups exploiting this ruling.

The result? Super PACs and dark money groups now dominate political campaigns, drowning out ordinary voters and empowering billionaires to buy policies that benefit their wealth and power. Donald Trump’s tax cuts, pushed by Charles Koch and his network, are a direct product of this judicial-led corruption.

Graves’s analysis is a stark warning: the Supreme Court is no longer an impartial arbiter but a political weapon reshaping America into a plutocracy. If we want to save our democracy, we must confront this judicial betrayal head-on and demand accountability from those who have hijacked our courts to serve the richest instead of the people.
