ICE Keeps Up Aggressive Immigration Raids in Puerto Rico Despite DHS Shake-Up
New leadership at the Department of Homeland Security has done nothing to slow down Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s relentless raids in Puerto Rico. According to HSI San Juan’s director, Rebecca González, the agency is still aggressively recruiting agents even as more than half of positions remain unfilled.
Despite recent leadership changes at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shows no sign of dialing back its aggressive immigration enforcement in Puerto Rico. Rebecca González, director of the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) office in San Juan, confirmed that the guidelines for street raids remain unchanged.
González’s remarks underscore a troubling continuity in ICE’s tactics, which have drawn sharp criticism for their harsh impact on immigrant communities. Even as more than half of ICE’s agent positions sit vacant, the agency is actively recruiting new personnel to maintain the intensity of its operations.
This relentless enforcement approach comes amid ongoing concerns about the humanitarian and civil rights consequences of ICE raids. Puerto Rico’s immigrant population continues to face heightened fear and disruption, with little indication that the new DHS leadership intends to shift course.
The persistence of these raids highlights a broader pattern of authoritarian overreach and disregard for democratic accountability that we have tracked throughout the Trump administration and beyond. ICE’s unyielding focus on aggressive immigration enforcement in Puerto Rico is another clear example of how leadership changes at the top fail to translate into meaningful reform on the ground.
For communities in Puerto Rico and across the United States, this means the fight against ICE’s abuses remains urgent. We will continue to monitor and expose these practices, pushing for transparency, accountability, and respect for civil rights.
