ICE Kills Undocumented Immigrant in Illinois Amid Operation Midway Blitz, Faces No Accountability

Four days after Trump’s Operation Midway Blitz launched a brutal crackdown in Chicago suburbs, ICE agents shot and killed Silverio Villegas González, an undocumented immigrant, in Franklin Park. Despite clear video evidence disproving DHS’s self-defense claims, no charges or investigations have followed, exposing a stark double standard in police accountability and immigrant justice.

ICE Kills Undocumented Immigrant in Illinois Amid Operation Midway Blitz, Faces No Accountability

On September 8, 2025, the Trump administration announced Operation Midway Blitz, a harsh immigration crackdown targeting “criminal illegal alien drunk drivers” across Illinois. The operation was cynically framed as honoring Katie Abraham, a young woman killed by an undocumented driver. Abraham’s parents publicly dismissed the rights of undocumented immigrants, demanding no due process for them.

Just four days later, ICE agents in Franklin Park, a majority-Latino suburb of Chicago, pulled over Silverio Villegas González, an undocumented Mexican immigrant, and shot him in the neck. After being shot, Villegas González’s car crashed into a parked tractor trailer. Despite his critical injury, ICE agents dragged him from the wreck and made a futile attempt at first aid.

DHS quickly issued a statement claiming Villegas González had struck an ICE agent with his car and dragged him “a significant distance.” However, body-camera footage from the Franklin Park Police Department disproves this narrative. The agent described his injuries as “nothing major,” and no evidence supports DHS’s exaggerated claims. The identity of the ICE agent remains undisclosed, and no charges have been filed.

Unlike high-profile cases in Minnesota, where investigations and lawsuits followed ICE shootings, Illinois authorities have shown blatant disregard. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office has no files on the shooting. The Mexican consulate’s formal requests for investigation were ignored. The Franklin Park Police Department has minimal records beyond the initial report and body-cam footage. Villegas González’s family received no updates, only autopsy results and their son’s mangled car.

Despite the silence from U.S. authorities, Villegas González’s death deeply affected his hometown near Irimbo, Michoacán. His body was returned in a cardboard box, and a large funeral united the community. Back in Franklin Park, local students risked truancy and confronted school security to hold a walkout in his memory. A roadside memorial maintained by the social justice group Hijas del Pueblo has been repeatedly vandalized but continues to stand as a testament to community resistance.

The stark contrast between the official responses to ICE violence in Minnesota and Illinois reveals a disturbing pattern of selective accountability and dehumanization of undocumented immigrants. While some victims receive justice and public mourning, others are erased without consequence. Silverio Villegas González’s killing exposes the Trump administration’s ongoing campaign of violent repression and impunity under the guise of “law enforcement.” We will keep tracking these abuses until the truth and justice prevail.
