ICE raid in Phoenix stems from human smuggling investigation - KJZZ

Immigration and Customs Enforcement says agents arrested more than 20 people in a raid in Phoenix on Monday.

A division of ICE called Homeland Security Investigations led the nighttime operation near near 15th and Peoria avenues. It stemmed from a human smuggling case, and agents had help from the Border Patrol.

Agents served criminal search warrants at two locations and arrested 23 people.

An ICE spokesperson says 20 were held on suspicion of being undocumented, while three others face criminal charges related to human smuggling. The investigation is ongoing.

The Arizona Luminaria and CALO News recently reported that ICE arrests tripled in Arizona during the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30.

ICE has released a 79-year-old Cuban woman from the Eloy Detention Center, after she spent nine months there. Julia Benitez suffers from dementia and was known inside the detention center as "la abuela," or the grandmother.

Emmanuel Damas, 56, complained of a toothache on Feb. 13, his brother said, and almost a week later, he could no longer speak. ICE has not yet acknowledged the death.

This measure would advance a resolution approved by supervisors last month that bars the use of masks for law enforcement, including ICE, if officers are not otherwise identifiable.

The Obama-era program has given temporary protection from deportation and a work permit to hundreds of thousands of immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. But that protection is waning under the second Trump administration.
