ICE Raid Outside Brooklyn Hospital Sparks Protest and Arrests in Bushwick
Federal immigration agents forcibly removed a Nigerian man from Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn, igniting protests and multiple arrests in the Bushwick neighborhood. The incident raises urgent questions about ICE enforcement at sensitive locations long considered off-limits.
Late Saturday night, chaos erupted outside Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Bushwick, Brooklyn, when federal immigration agents forcibly arrested an undocumented Nigerian man who had been brought to the hospital after detention. Dramatic video from witnesses shows agents dragging the man from the facility, sparking immediate outrage and a swift community response.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, the man refused orders to exit his vehicle, leading agents to use what they called the “minimum amount of force” to make the arrest. Witnesses on the scene strongly dispute this claim, insisting the man was clearly unwell and not in a condition to leave the hospital. Medical staff reportedly cleared him later, but the damage was done.
Hundreds of neighborhood residents quickly gathered outside the hospital, demanding accountability and protesting the federal agents’ presence in what many consider a “sensitive location.” The NYPD was called in to manage the crowd and nine people were arrested amid the unrest. One local, Hector, described the scene as “total chaos” but praised the community’s unity in standing up for their neighbors.
City Council Member Sandy Nurse condemned the raid as alarming and emblematic of a troubling increase in ICE activity in Bushwick. She highlighted the need for clear protections against immigration enforcement at hospitals, schools, and houses of worship—places traditionally shielded from these operations. Nurse called for passage of the “New York for All” state bill to clarify and strengthen these safeguards.
The New York Immigration Coalition has since demanded that city leaders, including Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, discipline officers who violated sanctuary laws and ensure no collusion with ICE occurs in New York City.
This incident underscores the ongoing tensions around immigration enforcement in communities that have long resisted federal overreach. It also highlights the urgent need for transparent policies to protect vulnerable people seeking medical care without fear of arrest.
Wyckoff Heights Medical Center declined to comment, and the NYPD emphasized it was not involved in the ICE operation itself, only in responding to public safety concerns.
As ICE continues to push into sensitive locations, Bushwick’s protest sends a clear message: communities will not stand silently by while federal agents trample on civil rights and human dignity.
