ICE Raids Empty Classrooms and Bank Accounts, Leave Kids Stranded

The Trump administration’s brutal ICE raids are ripping through communities, emptying school desks and draining district budgets. Thousands of U.S. citizen children are left parentless, shuffled into foster care, or forced to fend for themselves as their parents vanish into detention or deportation.

The fallout from Trump’s aggressive deportation campaign is hitting school districts where it hurts most: the classrooms and the kids. As The 74 reports, empty seats are piling up in schools across states like California and Minnesota — a direct consequence of families fleeing immigration enforcement or being torn apart by ICE. Since state funding depends on student attendance, districts are facing millions in lost revenue just as they struggle to serve their communities.

In Minnesota, where a deadly immigration enforcement raid in January shocked the region, districts must drop students from their rolls after 15 days of absence unless granted an emergency exemption. One district outside Minneapolis faces a staggering $1 million cut from its $51 million budget due to these absences. Staff describe school hallways as “eerie” and ghostly without the usual bustle of children.

But the crisis extends beyond money and empty classrooms. Thousands of U.S. citizen children find themselves suddenly parentless when their parents are detained or deported by ICE. Some are sent to foreign countries they barely know, others are shuffled between relatives who may themselves live in fear, and many are thrust into foster care or left to survive alone. Advocates report teenagers living on their own for weeks, with no oversight from ICE or social services.

This is not just a policy failure — it is a humanitarian crisis fueled by authoritarian overreach. The Trump administration’s ICE raids are dismantling families, destabilizing communities, and undermining the very institutions meant to protect children’s rights and welfare.
