Idaho’s Delegation Risks Undermining Democracy by Backing Trump’s Voter Suppression Agenda

Trump’s push to restrict voting access is not just reckless, it’s a direct attack on democracy. Idaho’s congressional delegation backing the SAVE Act and other voter suppression measures are enabling a federal takeover designed to make it harder for Americans—especially married women and marginalized groups—to cast ballots. This isn’t about election security; it’s about election control.

Idaho’s congressional leaders are dangerously close to falling in line with Donald Trump’s authoritarian efforts to restrict voting rights nationwide. The SAVE Act, supported by Idaho’s Mike Simpson and Russ Fulcher, would impose onerous ID requirements that disproportionately disenfranchise married women who have changed their names and anyone without a passport. This bill, still stalled in the Senate due to lack of votes to overcome a filibuster, is just one piece of Trump’s broader scheme to rig elections in his favor.

Trump’s executive order mandating the creation of a federal database to determine who can receive mail-in ballots is a brazen attempt to wrest control of elections from states and local officials. Experts warn this federal overreach threatens the privacy of millions and could silence eligible voters. The National Association of Election Officials calls it a direct override of state authority and a dangerous politicization of the voting process.

Mail-in voting has expanded democratic participation, especially for rural, elderly, and traveling voters—many of whom are Republicans. Yet Trump’s disdain for this system is clear: he wrongly claims it favors Democrats and seeks to eliminate or severely restrict it. Meanwhile, Idaho’s voter turnout lags behind states with robust mail-in voting, underscoring how these restrictions harm democracy.

Further alarming is Trump’s push to federalize the National Guard at polling places, a move that smacks of intimidation and echoes authoritarian tactics. While the National Guard insists it will follow legal and constitutional guidelines, the mere suggestion of militarizing elections is a threat to free and fair voting.

Idaho’s delegation must reconsider their support for policies that undermine the very foundation of our democracy. Voting rights have been hard-won over centuries and must be protected, not curtailed. Falling in lockstep with Trump’s voter suppression agenda risks eroding public trust and disenfranchising millions of Americans. Our democracy depends on it.
