Illinois Commission Demands Prosecution of ICE Agents After Brutal Chicago Immigration Raids

The Illinois Accountability Commission, established by Governor JB Pritzker amid the chaos of Operation Midway Blitz, has dropped a bombshell report demanding accountability for federal immigration agents who terrorized Chicago neighborhoods last fall. The report paints a grim picture of Border Patrol and ICE agents deploying tear gas, guns, and Blackhawk helicopters in aggressive raids that traumatized communities and shattered trust.

Judge Ruben Castillo, a commission member, did not mince words: "This is not hard to prosecute. Not that far at all as far as I'm concerned." The commission reviewed 16 key incidents, gathering testimony from victims, witnesses, and officials, and released new video evidence showing agents tackling people, questioning children about citizenship, and firing tear gas into protests. One chilling clip shows agents ignoring orders to stop high-speed chases and fabricating threats to justify their actions.

Despite this mountain of evidence, Cook County State's Attorney Eileen O'Neill Burke has yet to charge any federal agents. The commission urged her office to act or step aside for a special prosecutor, as a separate group is already pushing the courts to appoint one due to alleged conflicts of interest. Burke's office claims it cannot prosecute without a completed investigation from law enforcement, but the commission stresses that federal agencies have stonewalled accountability.

Governor Pritzker underscored the urgency: "We have laws for a reason, and when they are broken, the perpetrator must face consequences. Without justice our laws are merely suggestions." The commission also recommends banning roving patrols, requiring body cameras, ending paramilitary tactics, and disciplining agents who broke the rules.

Operation Midway Blitz officially wound down by December 2025 but remains a stark example of the Trump administration's aggressive immigration crackdown. Congressional battles over funding ICE and Customs and Border Protection continue, with Republicans pushing to fund these agencies despite Democratic demands for reform and oversight.

The Illinois Accountability Commission’s report is a clear call to action: federal immigration agents cannot operate above the law, and local prosecutors must stop enabling impunity. The people of Chicago deserve justice, not tear gas and terror.
