Illinois is drawing a line in the sand against the federal government’s aggressive immigration enforcement tactics with a new bill aimed at protecting community safety. Senator Kimberly Lightford (D-Maywood) introduced House Bill 5024 to prohibit the construction of new immigration detention centers within 1,500 feet of schools, day care centers, cemeteries, public parks, public housing, private residences, and places of worship.

This legislation is a direct response to the federal immigration raids that began in late 2025 in Broadview, Illinois, home to the state’s only immigration detention center. Residents and detainees have reported horrific conditions inside the Broadview Processing Center, including cramped cells, poor ventilation, and restricted access to legal counsel. These abuses fueled widespread protests led by community members demanding accountability and humane treatment.

Lightford condemned the federal government’s tactics, saying, “Protecting areas where children and families frequent from federal government overreach is imperative for community safety.” She emphasized that Illinois will not tolerate federal operations that disrupt residents’ quality of life or sow chaos in neighborhoods.

The bill has already passed the Senate Executive Committee and is moving to the full Senate for consideration. If enacted, it would ensure that the trauma experienced by Broadview’s residents during what was dubbed Operation Midway Blitz does not repeat elsewhere in Illinois.

Lightford’s move is part of a broader resistance against the Trump administration’s authoritarian immigration policies. By restricting where detention centers can be placed, Illinois lawmakers are pushing back against the federal government’s attempts to impose harsh immigration enforcement tactics in residential communities under the guise of security.

This effort highlights the ongoing struggle for immigrant rights and community safety amid a federal crackdown that has been marked by corruption, abuse, and disregard for civil liberties. Illinois is making clear that it will defend its residents against federal overreach and the human cost of the immigration detention industry.
