Illinois Takes a Stand Against Trump’s ICE Detention Centers in Residential Areas
State Rep. Aarón Ortíz has helped pass a bill banning immigration detention centers within 1,500 feet of homes, schools, parks, and daycare centers across Illinois. This move pushes back against Trump’s Operation Midway Blitz, which has terrorized communities with aggressive ICE raids and deadly conditions in detention facilities.
Illinois is drawing a clear line in the sand against the Trump administration’s abusive immigration enforcement tactics. State Representative Aarón Ortíz, a Democrat from Chicago, has championed legislation that prohibits immigration detention centers from operating near homes, schools, parks, daycare centers, and places of worship. The new law restricts these facilities from being located within 1,500 feet of these sensitive community spaces.
This legislative victory comes amid mounting evidence of ICE’s brutal impact on Illinois neighborhoods under Trump’s Operation Midway Blitz, launched in September 2025. The operation has unleashed a wave of aggressive and often deadly raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, who patrol residential streets masked and armed, instilling fear in families and disrupting daily life.
Reports have revealed a disturbing spike in deaths inside ICE detention centers, with more than 30 people dying in custody statewide. The detention facility in Broadview, Illinois, has become a stark example of the harm inflicted on local residents who live near these centers.
Ortíz condemned these “legally-dubious” detention sites, emphasizing the need to protect children and families from the “cruel and destructive immigration policy Trump wants to enact.” The new law, House Bill 5024, arms communities with a tool to prevent these federal incursions and safeguard neighborhoods from becoming testing grounds for harsh immigration enforcement.
By passing this measure, Illinois joins a growing resistance against the Trump administration’s unchecked ICE operations. It’s a direct challenge to the chaos and cruelty inflicted on immigrant communities and a step toward restoring dignity and safety to neighborhoods across the state.
