Indiana Officials Bust Fake Signature Scheme in Presidential Ballot Petition, Underscoring Real Election Fraud Risks

Election integrity isn’t just a slogan—it’s the foundation of democracy. In Indiana, county clerks and state officials are working overtime to ensure every vote counts and every signature on a petition is legitimate. Their vigilance recently uncovered a disturbing fraud scheme targeting the 2024 presidential ballot petition process.

To qualify for the statewide presidential ballot, campaigns must gather at least 500 valid signatures from each of Indiana’s nine congressional districts. But when one campaign enlisted outside help, county clerks in St. Joseph County noticed something was seriously off. Hundreds of signatures were fake.

Amy Rolfes, the Republican St. Joseph County clerk, didn’t mince words: “Election fraud is not a conspiracy theory. It is real here in St Joseph County, and that is the very first step in the fundamental rights of a voter, is to represent themselves.” The investigation revealed that out of 500 signatures submitted, only 19 were valid.

The fraud wasn’t isolated to one county. Similar fake signatures surfaced in Tippecanoe County, prompting prosecutions against the petition carrier and ultimately disqualifying the candidate from the ballot. This case is a rare but clear example of how the election system can be targeted—and why election officials must remain vigilant.

While national attention often focuses on baseless claims of widespread voter fraud, this incident shows that actual election fraud attempts do occur and must be rooted out.
