Iran Doubles Down on Strait of Hormuz Control, Escalates Regional Tensions Amid US Blockade

Iran is aggressively asserting sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, framing it as a strategic linchpin akin to a nuclear deterrent, even as the US maintains a naval blockade. Recent Iranian seizures of vessels and escalating rhetoric against Gulf allies reveal Tehran’s willingness to raise the stakes, signaling a dangerous brinkmanship that risks global oil markets and regional stability.

Iran Doubles Down on Strait of Hormuz Control, Escalates Regional Tensions Amid US Blockade

Iran’s leadership is sharpening its focus on the Strait of Hormuz as a critical tool for restoring its deterrence against the United States and Israel, according to a May 8 special report from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) and the Critical Threats Project (CTP). Mohammad Mokhber, adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader, compared control over the strait to possessing a nuclear weapon, underscoring Tehran’s view that dominance over this economic chokepoint grants it outsized influence over the global economy.

This framing comes as Iran’s traditional deterrence methods — including missile forces, drones, proxy militias, and air defenses — failed to prevent major US and Israeli strikes in 2025 and early 2026. Iran now appears to be betting on the strait as a new strategic lever, refusing to relinquish control even amid ongoing negotiations. ISW-CTP analysts warn that senior Iranian officials, notably IRGC Commander Ahmad Vahidi, may prefer renewed conflict over compromise if pressured to cede the strait.

Iran’s recent seizure of the vessel JIN LI in the Gulf of Oman highlights its readiness to enforce control and disrupt shipping routes. The ship, sanctioned by the US Treasury for transporting Iranian petroleum through shadow networks, was accused by Iranian media of undermining national interests by attempting to bypass coordination with Iranian forces. Such seizures not only reinforce Tehran’s claim but also heighten risks for commercial shipping and contribute to sustained high oil prices.

Meanwhile, US efforts to maintain a naval blockade aim to contain Iran’s influence, but the divide over the strait’s status remains a major sticking point. Iran has also intensified military and rhetorical pressure on the United Arab Emirates, seeking to punish Gulf states cooperating with Washington and Tel Aviv.

Adding to concerns, leaked Russian documents reveal plans to supply Iran with thousands of drones and operator training, potentially enhancing Tehran’s capacity to target US and allied assets through its proxies.

In sum, Iran’s escalating campaign to assert sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz signals a dangerous escalation in the ongoing conflict. The regime’s willingness to risk confrontation over this vital maritime corridor threatens global energy markets and regional security, demanding urgent attention from policymakers and the public alike.
