Iran Emerges Stronger as Trump’s Reckless Iran War Backfires on Everyone Else

President Donald Trump’s impulsive decision to launch and then abruptly halt what may be remembered as the First Iran War has left a clear winner and a long list of losers. The Islamic Republic of Iran, far from being toppled or weakened, has emerged emboldened and empowered, while the United States, its Gulf allies, Israel, and the people of Lebanon and Iran itself have suffered the consequences.

The Gulf states, particularly Saudi Arabia, counseled caution before the conflict, understanding that their prosperity depends on regional stability and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. But once the U.S. and Israel struck Iran, Tehran retaliated by blocking the strait and launching missile and drone attacks on Gulf countries. Despite pleas from these allies to continue pressure, Washington abruptly ended its offensive, leaving the Gulf states to bear the brunt of economic and security fallout.

The U.S. military’s destruction of Iranian targets and leaders echoes the Pentagon’s failed “body count” focus in Vietnam — a hollow tally that masks a strategic defeat. Trump’s boastful demands for regime change and unconditional Iranian surrender collapsed into a humiliating pivot toward an exit strategy that would make Neville Chamberlain blush. Meanwhile, Iran continues its economic warfare by effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz and demanding U.S. concessions, including halting Israeli attacks on Hezbollah.

Israel, a longtime adversary of Iran’s regime, hoped the war would weaken Tehran’s obsession with its annihilation. Instead, the conflict has radicalized and strengthened Iran’s regime, while also sparking suspicion within MAGA circles that Israel manipulated Trump into war — a false narrative that ignores Trump’s longstanding hostility toward Iran. Israel’s refusal to stop targeting Hezbollah has also complicated Trump’s attempts to negotiate an exit.

Lebanon has been devastated by Israeli strikes on Hezbollah, a terrorist group that does not enjoy majority Lebanese support but remains entrenched. The country suffers the side effects of this conflict without any benefits, as Hezbollah and Iran’s influence may grow stronger. A glimmer of hope appeared when Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu agreed to begin direct talks with Lebanon aimed at peace and weakening Hezbollah’s grip.

For ordinary Iranians, the war means harsher repression as their regime grows more confident. Meanwhile, China and renewable energy industries stand out as unexpected winners. China, with strong ties to both sides and a major customer for Iranian oil, brokered a 2023 deal renewing Saudi-Iran relations and benefits from U.S. failure. Higher oil prices also boost renewable energy viability, while non-Middle Eastern oil producers like Canada gain from concerns over Gulf supply disruptions.

This disastrous conflict underscores the Trump administration’s reckless approach to foreign policy — escalating military tensions without a coherent strategy or concern for the human and geopolitical costs. Iran’s survival and empowerment amid chaos reveal the consequences of impulsive war-making driven by distraction and authoritarian impulses rather than national interest or democratic accountability.
