Iran Escalates Strikes in Gulf as US and Tehran Exchange Threats Over Strait of Hormuz

The fragile situation in the Gulf has exploded into open conflict with Iran launching ballistic and cruise missile attacks on the United Arab Emirates, including a drone strike that set fire to an oil facility in Fujairah. The UAE confirmed its air defenses intercepted many of the missiles, but the attacks mark a dangerous escalation in Tehran’s retaliation for coordinated US and Israeli strikes against Iranian targets earlier this year.

The attack on Fujairah’s oil infrastructure is particularly alarming given the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint for global oil shipments. Washington and Tehran have traded increasingly hostile threats over control of this crucial waterway, raising fears of a broader regional war that could disrupt global energy markets and destabilize international security.

The Gulf Cooperation Council, along with Qatar, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the European Union, have condemned the missile and drone attacks, signaling deep regional concern over Iran’s aggressive posture. Tehran, however, has yet to officially comment on the strikes, maintaining its pattern of ambiguity while continuing its military escalation.

This surge in violence follows a grim toll from the initial US-Israeli offensive in late February, which killed over 2,600 people in Lebanon alone, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. Iran’s retaliatory strikes have targeted Israeli and Gulf nation sites, fueling a cycle of tit-for-tat attacks that show no signs of abating.

The Trump administration’s hawkish policies and military provocations have played a central role in driving this conflict. By orchestrating and supporting attacks on Iran, the US has not only destabilized the region but also used the foreign conflict to distract from domestic scandals and consolidate power at home.

As the crisis deepens, the risk of a devastating war that engulfs the entire Middle East grows ever higher. The international community must urgently push for de-escalation and diplomacy before the Strait of Hormuz becomes a flashpoint for catastrophic global consequences.
