Iran Threatens Escalation in Strait of Hormuz as US Clings to Fragile Ceasefire
Iran warns it has only just begun its fight over the Strait of Hormuz, signaling readiness to escalate despite a tenuous ceasefire with the US. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth insists Trump can continue military operations without Congress, even as attacks on US forces persist and oil prices soar.
The supposed ceasefire between the US and Iran is fraying fast, with Tehran openly threatening further conflict in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf declared bluntly, “We have not even begun yet,” signaling a willingness to escalate military pressure to maintain control over the crucial shipping lanes.
This comes after over ten attacks on US forces since the ceasefire was announced, according to Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Gen. Dan Caine. Iran’s parliament speaker accused the US and its allies of undermining secure shipping, warning that Tehran’s response will be severe and sustained.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth doubled down on the Trump administration’s stance that the ceasefire remains in effect, arguing that the president does not need congressional approval to continue military operations. Hegseth emphasized the “locked, loaded and ready to go” posture of US forces if Iran fails to uphold its end of the deal.
Meanwhile, Iran’s foreign ministry claims its strikes on Gulf neighbors are purely defensive, blaming US and Israeli aggression for regional instability. The United Arab Emirates recently intercepted a barrage of missiles and drones launched from Iran, which injured several civilians and sparked fires at key oil infrastructure.
The economic fallout is immediate and painful. US gas prices have surged 50 percent since the war began, and oil remains stubbornly above $100 a barrel, squeezing everyday Americans while Trump’s administration plays fast and loose with war powers and congressional oversight.
This dangerous brinkmanship exposes the Trump administration’s reckless use of foreign conflict to distract from domestic scandals and consolidate power. The so-called ceasefire is little more than a pause in a war that could spiral out of control, with catastrophic consequences for global security and American taxpayers alike. We’ll keep tracking every move and every lie as this administration gambles with lives and democracy.
