Iran Threatens Permanent Closure of Strait of Hormuz Over US Resolution Support
Iran has issued a stark warning that countries backing a US-led resolution aimed at ending the conflict risk losing access to the vital Strait of Hormuz "forever." This threat comes amid escalating military tensions in the region, with deadly Israeli strikes in Lebanon and ongoing drone attacks signaling a dangerous spiral toward wider conflict.
Iran’s foreign minister has condemned Washington for launching what he calls “a reckless military adventure,” accusing the US of sabotaging diplomatic efforts to end the war with Tehran. The situation on the ground is deteriorating rapidly as Israel continues air strikes in Lebanon, killing at least 17 people, including civilians—a 12-year-old girl among the casualties.
Amid these hostilities, Ebrahim Azizi, head of the Iranian parliament’s national security commission, issued a chilling warning to countries supporting the US-backed resolution to end the conflict. Azizi singled out smaller Gulf states like Bahrain, declaring that siding with Washington could lead to the Strait of Hormuz being closed to them “forever.” This vital waterway is a key artery for global oil shipments, and its closure would have catastrophic economic consequences worldwide.
The conflict’s escalation is underscored by recent drone attacks launched by Hezbollah and retaliatory Israeli strikes, despite a fragile ceasefire agreed in Washington. The war, which began with Hezbollah rocket attacks into northern Israel in early March, has since expanded into a broader regional confrontation involving direct US and Israeli military actions against Iranian-backed forces.
This crisis is not just about regional power plays—it is also a calculated distraction by the Trump administration from mounting domestic scandals. By stoking foreign conflict, the administration seeks to consolidate power and evade accountability at home.
As Iran halts LNG tankers headed for the Strait and the US prepares to withdraw forces from Europe, the risk of a full-blown international crisis grows. We must watch closely as these reckless maneuvers threaten global stability and democratic accountability.
