Iran Threatens “Regret-Inducing” Retaliation as Israel’s Deadly Strikes on Lebanon Escalate

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have issued a stark warning of a severe response if Israel does not halt its bombing campaign in Lebanon, where over 180 people have been killed in a rapid wave of airstrikes. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has escalated tensions sharply, vowing a “regret-inducing response” if Israel continues its deadly attacks on Lebanon. The IRGC declared that any aggression against Hezbollah — Iran’s key proxy in Lebanon — is considered a direct attack on Iran itself. This declaration comes amid Israel’s largest airstrike campaign in the conflict, hitting more than 100 targets in just 10 minutes and killing at least 182 people, mostly civilians, according to Lebanon’s civil defence.

The strikes have devastated Beirut’s southern suburbs, southern Lebanon, and the Bekaa Valley, filling the skies with plumes of black smoke and leaving hundreds wounded. Israel claims it is targeting Hezbollah command centers and military sites, but the scale of destruction and civilian casualties has alarmed international observers.

Despite a fragile ceasefire brokered between the US and Iran, the conflict in Lebanon remains outside its scope. Washington and Tel Aviv insist Lebanon is not covered by the truce, while Iran and Pakistan — which has acted as a mediator — maintain the ceasefire should apply there as well. This disagreement threatens to unravel diplomatic efforts and risks plunging the region back into full-scale war.

US Vice President JD Vance signaled that Israel might restrain its Lebanon operations to preserve the ceasefire with Iran, acknowledging a “legitimate misunderstanding” over the ceasefire’s geographical limits. However, Iran has accused the US of violating the agreement, pointing to recent strikes on Saudi infrastructure and ongoing drone attacks in the Gulf.

Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump has stoked the flames, warning that US forces will remain in the region “until a real agreement” is reached — with a threat of “shootin starts, bigger, and better” if tensions escalate further.

As Lebanon reels under the weight of airstrikes and Tehran threatens retaliation, the fragile peace in the Middle East hangs by a thread. The US administration’s willingness to overlook Israel’s Lebanon campaign undercuts the ceasefire’s credibility and risks a wider war that could destabilize the entire region. We will continue to track how this dangerous game of brinkmanship unfolds and who pays the price for these reckless power plays.
