Iran’s ongoing conflict with the US and Israel is wreaking havoc on its economy, with soaring inflation and massive job losses hitting ordinary Iranians hard. While Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei calls for economic and cultural “victory,” the reality on the ground is a currency in freefall, rampant price gouging, and widespread unemployment.

Iran’s Economy Crumbles Under War Pressure as Prices Skyrocket and Jobs Vanish

The war with the US and Israel is not just a military conflict for Iran — it’s an economic catastrophe. According to a recent report by Al Jazeera, prices for essentials like food, medicine, cars, and electronics have surged dramatically, while millions of Iranians face job losses or halted incomes. The rial has plummeted to a historic low of 1.84 million against the US dollar, fueling inflation rates that are among the highest worldwide.

This crisis is a toxic mix of Tehran’s mismanagement, relentless US sanctions, a naval blockade, and a near-total internet blackout that has lasted over two months. The economic paralysis is palpable in Tehran’s markets, where vendors exploit scarcity by jacking up prices to levels unseen in over a decade. For example, a 256GB iPhone 17 Pro Max, retailing at $1,200 in the US, is being sold for nearly $2,750 in Iran. Popular local cars like the Peugeot 206 now cost around $16,500 — a staggering price when the monthly minimum wage is only about $92.

State media attempts to downplay the crisis, blaming “psychological” factors and accusing vendors of spreading “fake prices.” Yet for everyday Iranians, these numbers don’t add up. Subsidies barely cover $10 worth of essentials per person monthly, forcing many to convert whatever little savings they have into assets that won’t lose value overnight.

Job losses are widespread across sectors, from tech firms in Tehran to steel plants in Isfahan. Despite this, Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei’s recent statement emphasized military “capabilities” and called for an economic and cultural fight against enemies. He urged businesses to avoid layoffs and claimed Iran is “traversing the path toward the peaks of progress,” a stark contrast to the grim reality facing millions.

This economic collapse underlines the devastating domestic toll of the Trump-era manufactured war with Iran. While the administration’s foreign policy escalates conflict abroad to distract from scandals at home, ordinary Iranians bear the brunt of the fallout — trapped in a cycle of inflation, unemployment, and repression.
