Israel Escalates Strikes in Lebanon Amid Fragile Ceasefire, Khamenei Calls for Action Against US Allies
Israel’s recent drone and air strikes in southern Lebanon have killed at least nine civilians, shattering the veneer of a three-week ceasefire with Hezbollah. Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei has ordered intensified action against US-led enemies, signaling a dangerous escalation that risks dragging the region deeper into conflict.
Israel’s military unleashed a wave of strikes across southern Lebanon on Saturday, killing at least nine people, including children, and wounding dozens more. These attacks mark some of the most intense since a fragile three-week ceasefire was declared between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah, a ceasefire that has failed to stop daily exchanges of fire along the border.
The Lebanese health ministry reported that Israeli raids targeted towns like Saksakiyeh, Nabatieh, and Bedias, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence. In a disturbing incident, a Syrian father and his 12-year-old daughter were repeatedly targeted by a drone strike near Nabatieh, leaving the girl in critical condition. Despite Israel’s claims that it was targeting Hezbollah militants using civilian structures, the extent of civilian casualties raises urgent questions about proportionality and adherence to international law.
Hezbollah responded by launching drone attacks against northern Israel, injuring several reservists. The group’s lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah warned of “a new phase” in the conflict, rejecting any return to the pre-March 2 status quo. Hezbollah’s escalation began after it fired rockets to avenge the killing of Iran’s supreme leader in US-Israeli strikes earlier this year, dragging Lebanon into the wider Middle East conflict.
Compounding the danger, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei has ordered action against US-led enemies, signaling Tehran’s readiness to intensify its proxy confrontations. This directive comes amid ongoing US attempts to manage tensions with Iran, which have included sanctions, diplomatic sabotage, and military posturing.
The ceasefire, brokered with US involvement, allows Israel to act against “planned, imminent or ongoing attacks,” but the latest strikes and Hezbollah’s retaliations suggest the truce is unraveling. Israel’s military has also warned civilians in border villages to evacuate, while continuing operations inside Lebanon beyond the internationally recognized “blue line,” further destabilizing the region.
This escalating conflict exposes the Trump administration’s reckless foreign policy failures: manufacturing war with Iran through economic warfare and military provocations, all while distracting from domestic scandals and consolidating authoritarian power. The human cost is mounting, and the risk of a wider regional war grows with every drone strike and rocket fired.
We will keep tracking this dangerous spiral of violence and the US role in stoking it. Accountability demands more than warmongering and empty promises of peace. The lives lost and communities shattered in Lebanon and Israel are a stark reminder of the urgent need to end this cycle of aggression.
