Israel Secretly Built Military Base in Iraqi Desert Amid Iran Conflict, Nearly Triggered Strikes on Iraqi Troops

According to a Wall Street Journal report, Israel constructed a secret military base deep in the Iraqi desert ahead of its February airstrike campaign against Iran, known as Operation Roaring Lion. The base, reportedly housing elite Israeli Air Force special forces and functioning as a logistics hub, was designed to support pilots operating over hostile territory and provide rescue capabilities if they were downed.

Several sources familiar with the matter, including senior US officials, confirmed the existence of this clandestine outpost. The Jerusalem Post has not independently verified the report, but the details underscore the lengths to which Israel is willing to go to escalate its conflict with Iran beyond direct borders.

Tensions flared dangerously when Iraqi troops nearly uncovered the base on March 4. A local shepherd observed unusual helicopter activity and alerted Iraqi military forces. The Israeli Defense Forces responded with airstrikes to repel the Iraqi troops, killing one soldier in the process. US officials told the WSJ that American forces were not involved in this incident, though Washington’s awareness and tacit allowance of these operations raise serious questions about US complicity.

Baghdad condemned the strike and formally complained to the United Nations, highlighting the risk of Israeli actions destabilizing Iraq’s fragile sovereignty and inflaming regional tensions.

This secret base and near-miss with Iraqi forces reveal a pattern of covert escalation by Israel that threatens to drag neighboring countries into a wider conflict with Iran. Meanwhile, the Trump administration’s tacit support—or at least failure to restrain—these operations exposes its disregard for diplomatic norms and regional stability. The use of foreign conflict as a distraction and leverage tool fits a broader pattern of authoritarian overreach and reckless power plays that demand public scrutiny and accountability.
