Israel’s relentless strikes on Lebanon threaten to shatter fragile Iran-US ceasefire
Israel’s massive airstrikes across Lebanon have killed hundreds and risk derailing a tenuous ceasefire deal between the US and Iran. Tehran insists Lebanon was included in the truce, while Israel and Washington deny it, escalating tensions that could reignite full-scale regional war.
Israel’s brutal bombing campaign in Lebanon this week has pushed a fragile ceasefire with Iran to the breaking point. At least 303 Lebanese civilians were killed in Wednesday’s strikes alone, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, as Israel targeted over 100 Hezbollah sites across the country. The devastation has displaced more than a million people and shattered any sense of safety for residents.
The core of the crisis is a bitter dispute over whether Lebanon was part of the ceasefire agreement brokered between the US and Iran. Iranian officials and mediator Pakistan say the truce covers Lebanon too, but Israel and the Trump administration flatly deny this. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and military spokespeople have insisted the fighting in Lebanon continues outside the ceasefire terms, issuing evacuation orders and vowing to destroy villages in southern Lebanon.
This conflict is deeply rooted in Israel’s decades-long war against Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed militia entrenched in Lebanon. After Hezbollah fired on Israeli positions following Hamas’s October 7 attacks, Israel launched an intense military campaign. The killing of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, by Israeli airstrike in February further escalated hostilities, prompting Hezbollah retaliations and Israeli ground invasions into southern Lebanon.
Iran has issued stark warnings that continued Israeli strikes constitute a violation of the ceasefire and threaten to provoke a “regret-inducing response.” The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has threatened to disrupt shipping through the strategic Strait of Hormuz if attacks persist. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi criticized the US for supporting Israel’s actions, calling on Washington to choose between peace and war.
European leaders have urged all parties to honor the ceasefire, including in Lebanon, but Israel’s recent moves suggest it intends to deepen its military presence and reshape Lebanon’s southern border. Far-right Israeli officials have openly discussed annexing parts of Lebanon and replicating Gaza-style destruction, raising alarms among human rights experts who warn these actions may amount to war crimes.
This escalating violence exposes the Trump administration’s reckless strategy of using foreign conflict to distract from domestic scandals and consolidate power. By enabling Israel’s aggressive campaign outside agreed terms, the US risks unraveling diplomatic progress and plunging the region into wider war. The world is watching whether Washington will uphold its commitments or fuel further bloodshed in Lebanon and beyond.
