Justice Department Files Antitrust Suit Against Ohio Healthcare Company
The U.S. Department of Justice and Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost have filed an antitrust lawsuit against OhioHealth, a corporation that operates 16 hospitals and approximately 200 additional healthcare facilities across Ohio. The complaint alleges that OhioHealth uses its market dominance to impose contractual restrictions that prevent insurers from offering lower-cost health insurance options, effectively shielding itself from price competition. Attorney General Pamela Bondi stated the lawsuit is part of the DOJ's broader effort to protect consumers and reduce healthcare costs nationwide.
Attorney General Bondo said, “Americans deserve low-cost, high-quality healthcare – not anticompetitive hospital system contracts that make healthcare less affordable.”
The Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost have filed suit against OhioHealth, accusing the corporation of making insurance more expensive and violating antitrust laws. The company controls 16 hospitals and outpatient facilities throughout the state of Ohio, with an additional 200 doctors’ offices, rehabilitation centers, and clinics.
The complaint alleges that OhioHealth uses its market power to impose restrictions and prevent insurers from offering health insurance savings, stating that more providers in the local area would allow for cheaper healthcare options for Ohio residents. The complaint also stated that “OhioHealth’s contractual restrictions insulate it from price competition and help to maintain its extremely high prices.”
“Americans deserve low-cost, high-quality healthcare – not anticompetitive hospital system contracts that make healthcare less affordable,” said Attorney General Pamela Bondi. “This Department of Justice will continue taking legal action to protect consumers and drive down healthcare costs across America.”
