The FBI is in turmoil under Kash Patel, the Trump loyalist installed as director whose tenure is now defined by scandal, secrecy, and suspicion. The latest bombshells dropped by Atlantic reporter Sarah Fitzpatrick, whom Patel sued for $250 million over earlier drinking allegations, paint a picture of a bureau consumed by loyalty tests and a leader seemingly drunk on power.

The saga began with a damning April report alleging Patel’s “conspicuous inebriation and unexplained absences” while running the FBI. More than two dozen current and former officials described a director often unreachable, delaying meetings due to late-night drinking, and alarming Justice Department leaders with his erratic conduct. Patel denied everything and threatened legal action, but that did not stop the fallout.

On Wednesday, MS NOW revealed the FBI’s insider threats unit in Alabama had quietly launched an investigation to identify sources behind Fitzpatrick’s reporting — a move insiders called chilling and unusual given the leaks involved unclassified information. This aggressive probe into journalists signals a disturbing trend of weaponizing federal agencies to intimidate and silence critics.

Then Fitzpatrick dropped another bombshell: Patel had been distributing custom Woodford Reserve bourbon bottles engraved with “Ka$h Patel FBI Director” and the FBI shield. These bottles were handed out at official events, including travel tied to the 2026 Winter Olympics. Current and former bureau officials told The Atlantic the gesture was embarrassing, tone-deaf, and emblematic of a growing “cult of personality” around Patel.

The atmosphere inside the FBI is reportedly tense and paranoid. One engraved bottle went missing at a Quantico event, sparking fears of polygraph tests and further loyalty purges. This paranoia extends beyond alcohol-related controversies. Last year, Patel faced a lawsuit from a former gay FBI intelligence specialist fired over displaying a Progress Pride flag, highlighting a hostile climate for LGBTQ+ employees.

Congressional Democrats have also weighed in, demanding Patel undergo alcohol abuse screening, citing serious concerns about his fitness to lead the nation’s top law enforcement agency. Meanwhile, rumors swirl that Patel’s days at the bureau may be numbered amid the relentless stream of damaging headlines.

The controversy hits a nerve for President Donald Trump, who abstains from alcohol and has publicly lamented his brother’s struggles with alcoholism. Trump’s tolerance for aides with drinking issues has historically been low, raising questions about Patel’s future despite the White House’s ongoing public defense.

Kash Patel’s FBI is no longer just a federal agency — it’s a spectacle of dysfunction, loyalty tests, and a leader whose judgment is under intense scrutiny. The question now is whether this turmoil will prompt accountability or deepen the bureau’s descent into politicized chaos.
