To the editor: I write regarding the March 4 letter to the editor "Israel embroils America in its 'preemptive' war."

On Sept. 5, 2025, the White House issued a statement changing the name of the Defense Department to the Department of War. The goal of this change in nomenclature was to "demonstrate our ability and willingness to fight and win wars on behalf of our nation at a moment's notice ... and availability to wage war." Stephen Miller, the deputy chief of staff for policy in the White House (Donald Trump's ideologue-in-chief), commented: "We're a superpower. ... We are going to conduct ourselves as a superpower."

Trump's willingness to launch a war against Iran might have something to do with his desire to establish himself as a warrior, perhaps compensating for a military career tragically cut short by crippling heel spurs. In any event, blaming America's involvement in another Middle East conflict on Israel is nonsense. Nobody dragged us kicking and screaming into this war.
