Linda Sánchez Demands Trump Tariff Refunds Reach Struggling Families, Not Corporations

The chaos unleashed by Donald Trump’s illegal tariffs continues to ripple through the economy, hitting American families, workers, and small businesses hardest while big corporations reap the benefits. Linda Sánchez, Ranking Member of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Trade, is sounding the alarm: refunds from these tariffs must go to Main Street, not corporate boardrooms.

More than a year after Trump imposed sweeping tariffs on nearly every major trading partner, the promised economic boom remains a mirage. Instead of revitalizing manufacturing and securing trade deals, the tariffs have driven up consumer prices, disrupted supply chains, and cost American workers their jobs. The result? Families have paid roughly $2,000 more in the past year for everyday goods, while the nation’s debt soared and manufacturing jobs disappeared — more than 100,000 lost under Trump’s watch.

The Supreme Court recently struck down these illegal tariffs, forcing the administration to start accepting refund applications. But as Sánchez points out, the process overwhelmingly favors large corporations. These companies, with their deep pockets and legal teams, can navigate the complicated system to claw back costs. Meanwhile, small businesses and families, who bore the brunt of price hikes, face an uphill battle just to get a fair shake.

“Refunds shouldn’t just go to corporations,” Sánchez argues. “Yes, they paid the bulk of the tariffs initially but then passed those costs on to consumers in the form of higher prices, forcing families to pay more. Americans deserve to get their money back.” She emphasizes that working- and middle-class families who felt the squeeze every month deserve the lion’s share of any refund — not the president’s billionaire allies who barely noticed the price increases.

Beyond refunds, Sánchez calls for Congress to step up and support American workers and farmers left behind by Trump’s failed trade policies. “Trump promised a manufacturing renaissance. Instead, we lost jobs and saw businesses freeze hiring or lay off workers.” Democrats propose investing in job training, apprenticeships, and renewing the Trade Adjustment Assistance program — vital lifelines Republicans let expire.

Small businesses also need protection. Unlike corporations, they lack the resources to absorb higher costs or fight legal battles. The refund process should be automatic for these businesses, not a complicated maze that leaves them out in the cold.

Trump’s trade wars promised strength and prosperity but delivered economic turmoil and uncertainty. Sánchez urges Republicans to stop cowering to the president and join Democrats in making American families whole, supporting workers, and holding corporations accountable.

It’s time to put Main Street ahead of Wall Street.
