MAGA Secures Control Over Military’s Independent Newspaper, Silencing Critical Voices

Trump’s administration has seized control of Stars and Stripes, the military’s congressionally protected independent newspaper, turning it into a propaganda tool for MAGA loyalists. This move, part of a broader purge targeting diversity and dissent within the Pentagon, threatens the military’s nonpartisan tradition and the flow of vital information to service members.

The Trump administration’s relentless MAGA takeover of the United States military has taken a dangerous new turn with the capture of Stars and Stripes, the military’s independent newspaper. Established during the Civil War and protected by Congress to ensure editorial independence, Stars and Stripes has long served as a trusted source of news for service members, free from political interference. Now, that independence is being systematically dismantled.

Jacqueline Smith, the ombudsman charged by Congress with safeguarding the paper’s editorial freedom, was abruptly fired without explanation on April 28. Smith’s removal is part of a sweeping campaign by the administration to purge officials who enforce ethics and oversight across government agencies. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell openly declared the newspaper will now ban “woke content” and focus solely on “warfighting, weapons systems, fitness, lethality, survivability, and ALL THINGS MILITARY.” In other words, Stars and Stripes will become a mouthpiece for Trump’s MAGA agenda, stripped of its critical watchdog role.

Former managing editor D. Earl Stephens called this “the most significant attack in the paper’s history,” warning it benefits Trump, not the troops. Under the new regime, reporting on issues like poor military housing, medical care struggles, sexual assault, and veteran suicides will likely vanish. This deprives service members of crucial information needed to hold the military establishment accountable.

This takeover fits a broader pattern of politicization and purges within the Pentagon. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, a Trump loyalist, has overseen the firing of senior officers, many of whom are Black, brown, or women—targeted under the guise of opposing “woke” policies. Notably, Army Chief of Staff Randy George was dismissed reportedly because he opposed Hegseth’s refusal to promote Black and female colonels. Loyalty to MAGA and racial and gender conformity now trump professionalism and leadership.

The administration’s assault on military professionalism extends beyond personnel. Hegseth announced the Pentagon will ban military personnel from attending elite universities like Harvard and MIT starting in 2027, framing these institutions as unpatriotic despite their taxpayer funding.

Trump’s vision is clear: a military stripped of diversity, critical oversight, and independence, transformed into a politicized force serving his authoritarian ambitions. The erosion of Stars and Stripes’ editorial independence is a chilling warning of the broader decay of democratic norms within the armed forces. This is not just a military story—it is a direct threat to American democracy itself.
