Majority of Americans Say Attacking Iran Was a Mistake, Poll Shows
A new Washington Post-ABC-Ipsos poll reveals that 61 percent of Americans believe the US attack on Iran was a mistake, reflecting widespread concern over rising costs and skepticism about the war’s success. Despite President Trump’s hawkish actions contradicting his campaign promises, Republican support for the war remains strong.
A recent poll conducted by Washington Post, ABC, and Ipsos exposes a harsh reality for the Trump administration’s Iran war policy: the American public overwhelmingly disapproves. According to the survey released on Friday, 61 percent of respondents believe that military action against Iran was a mistake, with only 36 percent backing the decision.
This widespread opposition comes amid escalating economic pressures at home. The war, launched in late February by the US and Israel, has killed thousands across the Middle East and sent global energy prices soaring. Nearly half of Americans report cutting back on driving and household expenses due to higher gas prices, with these numbers rising sharply among those earning less than $50,000 annually.
President Trump’s approval ratings have plummeted to new lows, fueled by voter frustration over the cost of living and economic instability. The poll highlights a glaring contradiction: 46 percent of respondents say the attack on Iran conflicts with Trump’s 2016 campaign promise to avoid unnecessary foreign wars.
Public skepticism about the war’s effectiveness is high. Only 19 percent of Americans believe US military actions against Iran have been successful, while 39 percent say they have failed. The remaining 41 percent think it is too soon to judge. These figures place the Iran conflict’s unpopularity on par with the Iraq War during its violent peak in 2006 and the Vietnam War in the early 1970s.
Yet, support for the war remains strong within Trump’s Republican base. Nearly 80 percent of Republicans endorse the decision to attack Iran, although they are split evenly on whether the military operations have succeeded or if it’s too early to tell.
This poll underscores the growing disconnect between the Trump administration’s aggressive foreign policy and the American public’s wariness, especially as economic hardships mount. The consequences of this war are not just felt overseas but are hitting ordinary Americans in their wallets, fueling a crisis of confidence in leadership that promised to keep the nation out of endless conflicts.
