U.S. Secret Service agents shot and killed a man after he entered the secure perimeter at Mar-a-Lago, the agency said Sunday.

The man, who appeared to be armed with a shotgun, was confronted by Secret Service agents and a deputy from the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office early Sunday morning after being observed by the resort’s north gate, according to a statement from Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said that law enforcement ordered the man to drop his shotgun and a gas canister, after which he “raised the shotgun to a shooting position” and was subsequently shot and killed.

No law enforcement officers were harmed during the incident and President Donald Trump was not at his Florida residence at the time of the shooting, according to the statement from Secret Service.

Guglielmi also said the incident was under investigation by the FBI, Secret Service and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, adding that the agents involved in the shooting would be placed on administrative leave during the investigation. The Secret Service is withholding the man’s identity until his family is notified.
