Nearly 10 Anti-ICE Protesters Detained After Clashing Over Arrest of Immigrant with Violent Past

Anti-ICE protests erupted in Brooklyn’s Bushwick neighborhood this past weekend after ICE agents arrested Chidozie Wilson Okeke, a Nigerian immigrant who overstayed his tourist visa and has a documented history of assault and drug-related offenses. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Okeke resisted arrest, attempting to strike ICE officers with his vehicle and physically fighting them during the operation.

The arrest operation escalated when Okeke, after being taken to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center for evaluation, continued to resist medical staff by throwing himself to the floor and screaming. Video footage shows ICE agents forcibly removing him from the hospital following the evaluation, which he eventually passed.

Outside the hospital, a crowd of anti-ICE demonstrators gathered, turning violent by damaging ICE vehicles and assaulting agents, resulting in minor injuries to officers. The New York Police Department (NYPD), which does not engage in immigration enforcement, responded to reports of disorderly conduct, obstruction of emergency entrances, and blocking traffic. After issuing multiple dispersal warnings, the NYPD arrested eight protesters on charges including resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, reckless endangerment, and criminal mischief. One additional individual was issued a summons and released.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned ICE raids as “cruel and inhumane” and ineffective for public safety, stating he has communicated this stance directly to President Biden. This incident highlights the persistent conflict between federal immigration enforcement efforts and local community resistance, especially in cities like New York that have taken a critical stance on ICE operations.

The case of Okeke is emblematic of the complex and often contentious nature of immigration enforcement, where public safety concerns collide with advocacy against what many view as aggressive and unjust federal practices. The protests and subsequent arrests serve as a stark reminder that ICE operations continue to provoke fierce opposition, fueling debates over immigration policy, law enforcement tactics, and civil rights protections in immigrant communities.
