Nevada GOP Secretary of State Race Reveals Sharp Divide Over Election Integrity Claims

The upcoming Nevada GOP primary for secretary of state is shaping up as a crucial test of how far Republican voters want to push election overhaul efforts — and whether they buy into the dangerous myth of widespread voter fraud.

Northern Nevada businesswoman Shirley Folkins-Roberts, backed by Gov. Joe Lombardo and holding a significant fundraising edge, stands apart from her Republican rivals by rejecting claims of massive fraud. “I don’t know that security is the issue. I think there’s confusion, there’s lack of confidence,” Folkins-Roberts told The Nevada Independent. “I am not alleging fraud in any way, shape or form.”

Her three opponents, all perennial candidates, have embraced unsubstantiated and conspiratorial claims that cast doubt on the legitimacy of Nevada’s elections. Former Assemblywoman Sharron Angle, who once backed efforts to block certification of election results, insists fraud “threatens the legitimacy of elections” and accuses the state of being too lenient on election crimes. Jim Marchant, a former assemblymember and 2022 GOP nominee for secretary of state, claims he has not trusted Nevada election results for two decades. Socorro Keenan alleges thousands of non-citizens illegally voted in 2020, a claim the FBI debunked after finding only 38 potential cases out of more than 1.3 million ballots cast.

These starkly different views reflect a broader national pattern: Republican candidates who either seek to restore public faith in elections or fuel baseless conspiracy theories that undermine democracy and justify restrictive voting laws.

The winner of the June 9 primary will face incumbent Democrat Cisco Aguilar, who has a commanding fundraising advantage and no primary opposition. The secretary of state’s office in Nevada will play a pivotal role in managing elections amid federal interference threats and implementing voter ID requirements likely to take effect in 2028.

Nevada Republicans face a clear choice: support candidates who promote election integrity based on facts or those who peddle falsehoods that erode trust in democracy. The stakes could not be higher for the future of voting rights and democratic accountability in the state.
