New Jersey Dems Slam GOP’s “Election Interference” Task Force as MAGA Distraction

New Jersey Democrats are calling out the state GOP’s new election-integrity task force as a sham effort rooted in baseless voter fraud claims. State Dem Chair LeRoy Jones Jr. says the move is a full embrace of Trump-era conspiracy theories designed to undermine trust in elections and distract from real issues.

The New Jersey Republican Party’s recent announcement of an election-integrity task force has drawn sharp rebuke from state Democrats who see it as a cynical political stunt. On Thursday, State Democratic Chair LeRoy Jones Jr. condemned the GOP’s move as a capitulation to the “fabricated” mass voter fraud narrative pushed by Donald Trump and his MAGA allies.

“It only took a decade and the election of a new state Republican chair, but the New Jersey Republican Party has finally fully embraced Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans fabled ‘flood the zone with nonsense’ approach to politics,” Jones said in a statement.

The task force, announced Wednesday by GOP Chairwoman Christine Giordano Hanlon, claims it will investigate and address “irregularities” in New Jersey’s electoral system. But Democratic leaders quickly dismissed the effort as baseless and politically motivated.

Matt Riggins, chair of the Burlington County Democratic Committee, called it an “election interference task force” designed to distract from the chaos caused by Trump’s policies. “It is a deliberate attempt to distract from the chaos that Donald Trump is inflicting on our economy and our global standing,” Riggins said.

New Jersey officials have repeatedly affirmed the security and integrity of the state’s elections. While U.S. Attorney Robert Frazer recently charged four non-citizens with illegal voting dating back to 2020, state authorities emphasize these cases are rare exceptions and do not indicate widespread fraud.

Jones also took aim at Hanlon, who is also Monmouth County GOP chairwoman, noting that two of the four individuals charged with illegal voting were from Monmouth County. “If they want to start small then perhaps a ‘sub-committee’ to look into the Monmouth County Clerk’s office to find out why two of the four people being charged by the U.S. Attorney with illegally voting are from there,” Jones suggested.

This episode fits into a broader pattern of Republican-led efforts nationwide to sow doubt about election results through unsubstantiated fraud claims. By establishing a task force based on these false premises, New Jersey’s GOP appears to be following the Trump playbook of undermining democratic norms and weaponizing misinformation for political gain.

As election denialism continues to fuel attacks on democracy, voices like Jones’ serve as a reminder that vigilance and accountability are essential to preserving electoral integrity against partisan sabotage.
