New York Pushes Back Against ICE with Bold Ban on Masked Raids in Schools, Hospitals, and Churches

New York is drawing a hard line against ICE’s aggressive immigration tactics by banning agents from wearing masks and raiding sensitive community spaces without a warrant. This sweeping package, part of the state budget deal, also cuts off local cooperation with ICE and ends immigrant detention in state jails — provoking threats from Trump’s border czar to flood cities with more agents.

New York Pushes Back Against ICE with Bold Ban on Masked Raids in Schools, Hospitals, and Churches

New York state is taking a stand against the Trump administration’s brutal immigration enforcement with a new set of protections aimed squarely at ICE’s overreach. As part of a comprehensive budget deal announced Thursday, the state will ban ICE agents from wearing face masks during operations and prohibit them from entering schools, hospitals, and churches without a judge-signed warrant. These measures also forbid state and local officials from collaborating with ICE and block the use of New York jails for immigrant detention.

This bold move comes amid mounting evidence of ICE’s aggressive tactics under Trump. An investigation by The Guardian revealed that in just the first seven months of Trump’s return to office, ICE arrested the parents of at least 27,000 children, including thousands of U.S. citizens — stoking fears of a new family separation crisis worse than what was seen during Trump’s first term.

Trump’s so-called border czar Tom Homan responded with thinly veiled threats. Speaking at a Border Security Expo in Phoenix, Arizona, Homan warned that New York and other states refusing to cooperate with ICE would face a flood of federal agents. “You’re going to see more ICE agents you ever seen before,” Homan boasted. He made it clear that even non-priority targets would be swept up in these raids, dragging more undocumented immigrants into Trump’s mass deportation dragnet.

New York’s measures are a direct challenge to the Trump administration’s authoritarian immigration agenda. By banning masks, the state aims to hold ICE accountable and prevent agents from hiding their identities during raids on vulnerable communities. Restricting access to schools, hospitals, and churches protects essential public spaces from becoming battlegrounds in the immigration war.

This legislation is a critical part of a broader trend of resistance against ICE abuses and the Trump administration’s attacks on immigrant rights. It underscores the urgent need for states to push back when the federal government weaponizes immigration enforcement to terrorize families and communities.

New York’s bold stance sends a clear message: ICE’s unchecked raids and family separations will not be tolerated. But with federal agents threatening to escalate their presence, the fight to protect immigrant communities is far from over. We’ll be watching closely as this battle unfolds, holding power accountable every step of the way.
