Noncitizens Charged With Illegally Voting in Federal Elections Expose Rare but Weaponized Claims of Voter Fraud

Federal authorities have charged a small number of noncitizens with illegally voting in recent federal elections. While these cases are extremely rare, they are seized upon by election deniers to justify sweeping voter suppression laws that threaten democratic participation nationwide.

In the ongoing battle over voting rights, a handful of noncitizens have recently been charged with illegally casting ballots in federal elections, according to reports from AllSides. These cases, though notable, are exceptionally rare and do not reflect widespread fraud. Yet they are frequently weaponized by election deniers and partisan operatives to push restrictive voting laws that disproportionately target communities of color and marginalized voters.

Federal prosecutors have brought charges against several individuals who allegedly voted without citizenship status. While any illegal voting is a violation of election law, experts emphasize that such instances are minuscule compared to the vast number of lawful votes cast every election cycle. The Brennan Center for Justice and other watchdog groups have repeatedly documented that voter fraud in the United States is vanishingly rare, with noncitizen voting comprising an infinitesimal fraction.

Despite this, right-wing activists and some politicians use these isolated cases to stoke fear and justify harsh voter ID requirements, purges of voter rolls, and limitations on early and mail-in voting. These measures have been shown to suppress turnout among eligible voters, undermining democratic participation and disproportionately harming Black, Latino, and Indigenous communities.

The broader context is clear: claims of widespread voter fraud, including noncitizen voting, are part of a coordinated effort to delegitimize elections and erode trust in democratic institutions. This narrative has fueled a wave of legislation designed to restrict access to the ballot under the guise of election integrity.

As courts and independent investigations continue to debunk false claims of mass voter fraud, it is critical to recognize that the rare cases of illegal voting do not justify sweeping restrictions that threaten the right to vote for millions of Americans. Democracy depends on protecting access, not erecting barriers based on unfounded fears.

Only Clowns Are Orange remains committed to exposing how these voter fraud myths are weaponized to attack democracy and holding accountable those who seek to undermine the fundamental right to vote.
