NYC Officials Slam ICE After Violent Clash Outside Brooklyn Hospital Ends in 8 Arrests

Federal immigration enforcement agents sparked outrage in Bushwick, Brooklyn, Saturday night after arresting Chidozie Wilson Okeke, a Nigerian national accused of overstaying his tourist visa. According to the Department of Homeland Security, Okeke resisted arrest and was taken to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center for evaluation, where a large crowd quickly gathered.

The protest outside the hospital escalated into chaos, with demonstrators damaging ICE vehicles and confronting officers, several of whom suffered minor injuries. Police say the crowd was disorderly, blocking traffic and ignoring orders to disperse. The NYPD, which was not involved in the ICE operation, arrested eight people after responding to a 911 call about the disturbance near Stanhope Street and Wyckoff Avenue.

City officials were quick to denounce the incident and the broader pattern of ICE activity in New York City neighborhoods. Mayor Zohran Mamdani reiterated his longstanding opposition to ICE raids, calling them “cruel and inhumane” and ineffective for public safety. “I’ve said time and time again, ICE raids do nothing to serve in the interest of public safety,” Mamdani said during the Five Boro Bike Tour on Sunday.

Local representatives echoed the mayor’s condemnation. City Councilmember Sandy Nurse, whose district includes Bushwick, thanked protesters for mobilizing against ICE’s presence. Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso described the agency’s actions as “deeply disturbing,” declaring that “ICE is not welcome in Brooklyn.” State Senator Julia Salazar noted on social media that ICE appears to have increased its enforcement presence in the neighborhood recently.

The protests continued well into the early hours of Sunday, with streets blocked and trash thrown into the road. Residents like Mari, a lifelong Bushwick local whose undocumented mother lives nearby, expressed deep fear about ICE’s encroachment. “It’s always been like a huge fear for me,” Mari said, highlighting the chilling effect of immigration enforcement on families and communities.

Hospital staff declined to comment on the incident.

This clash is the latest flashpoint in a pattern of aggressive ICE operations in New York City, drawing fierce backlash from local leaders and residents who view the agency’s tactics as hostile to immigrant communities and public safety. With elected officials united in opposition, the question remains how long ICE will continue to operate with impunity in neighborhoods that reject its presence.
