Oakland May Day Rally Roars Against Trump’s Billionaire Agenda and ICE Detentions

On May 1, around 1,500 people from diverse backgrounds converged at Fruitvale Plaza in Oakland to send a blunt message: the Trump administration’s policies are wrecking working-class lives. The rally was a fiery rebuke of soaring food and gas prices, unauthorized wars, and the growing wealth gap that has made billionaires richer while millions struggle to feed their families.

“I have to choose between paying my health insurance and feeding my children,” said Leana, a Berkeley mother of three. Her sign read simply, “F — Trump.” Her story echoed throughout the crowd, where anger over economic hardship mixed with outrage at the administration’s environmental and immigration policies.

A key flashpoint was the Trump administration’s plan to reopen a federal facility in Dublin, California, once notorious for its “rape club” culture and unsanitary conditions, now eyed to become an expanded ICE detention center. This move sparked fierce protests from former inmates and activists who refuse to let the site become a concentration camp for immigrants. Berkeley resident Marla Kamiya highlighted a recent government environmental report declaring the facility unfit for housing people — yet the administration pushes to reopen it anyway.

Signs condemning ICE’s violent tactics and calls to remove agents from schools and communities were widespread. The rally underscored California’s role as home to eight of the nation’s 20 private immigrant detention centers, spotlighting the for-profit system that profits from human misery.

Retired union member Richard Bolecek summed up the mood: “Workers over billionaires.” Even amid debates about political candidates with complicated ties to wealth, the rally’s focus remained clear — fight for economic justice and hold the Trump administration accountable for its authoritarian overreach.

Oakland’s demonstration was part of a nationwide wave of May Day protests. In San Francisco, civil disobedience led to 25 arrests as activists, including elected officials, demanded better wages and working conditions at the city’s airport.

This is not just a protest — it is a call to action against the corruption, cruelty, and corporate greed fueling the Trump era. We’ll be watching closely as these fights unfold.
