Ohio’s Republican primary for secretary of state delivered a clear rebuke to the faction of the GOP most closely tied to Trump’s “Big Lie” and the national election denial movement. Robert Sprague, the state treasurer with deep establishment support, defeated Marcell Strbich, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel backed by Cleta Mitchell — a key architect of efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

The contest was more than a simple primary; it was a battle over who will oversee Ohio’s elections amid a nationwide Republican push to restrict voting access. Strbich ran as an outsider focused heavily on so-called “election integrity,” adopting the conspiracy-laden rhetoric championed by Mitchell, who endorsed him as a “national leader” in election oversight and a “citizen patriot.” Mitchell actively promoted Strbich up until Election Day, framing him as the candidate best positioned to fight alleged threats like noncitizen voting — a claim that experts say is baseless.

Sprague, by contrast, ran as a traditional Republican officeholder with a history in the Ohio House and as state treasurer. While he rejected the outright election denialism of Strbich’s camp, Sprague did not shy away from restrictive voting policies. His campaign attacked mail-in ballot drop boxes as “vulnerable to ballot harvesting and fraud” despite no credible evidence, promising to eliminate them. He also supported stricter citizenship verification for voters, even though voting by noncitizens is already illegal and rare in Ohio.

Sprague’s campaign leaned into theatrical tactics, including a bizarre Sesame Street-style video featuring a puppet called “Lefty the Cheat” emerging from a drop box to warn of election fraud risks. His “Plan for Secure Elections” echoed the GOP’s broader national narrative that elections are insecure and vulnerable — a narrative that has been thoroughly debunked but remains politically potent within the party.

This primary result underscores a critical divide within the Republican Party. The establishment wing embraces a more mainstream, though still restrictive, approach to voting rights, while the hardline faction aligned with Trump’s “Big Lie” pushes the envelope further, seeking outright control over election administration to cement partisan advantage.

Sprague will now face Democratic state representative Allison Russo in the general election. While Sprague’s victory may seem like a win for the GOP establishment, it does not signal a retreat from anti-democratic voting restrictions. Instead, it highlights how deeply entrenched these attacks on voting rights have become within the party’s mainstream.

Ohio voters should remain vigilant. The secretary of state’s office controls voter registration, ballot access, and election certification — all critical levers in safeguarding or undermining democracy. This race is a reminder that the fight over election integrity is far from over, and the stakes have never been higher.
