Oklahoma Governor Bypasses Legislature to Crack Down on Immigrant Benefits

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt has issued an executive order directing state agencies to intensify immigration-status verification for welfare programs, stepping in after the state Senate stalled two bills designed to do the same. The order targets programs like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and Medicaid, mandating the use of the federal Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) system to weed out applicants without legal status.

Stitt justified the order by insisting welfare benefits should go only to “eligible Oklahomans, not to people who are in this country illegally.” He echoed former President Trump’s call for states to enforce strict eligibility rules to protect taxpayer dollars. The executive order mirrors House Bills 4422 and 4423, championed by House Speaker Kyle Hilbert, which passed the Oklahoma House but have been stalled in the Senate.

Hilbert praised Stitt’s move, framing it as a necessary step to prevent fraud and uphold the rule of law. “Oklahoma taxpayers should never be forced to subsidize benefits for individuals who are in our country illegally,” Hilbert said. He emphasized support for legal immigrants, American workers, and immigration enforcement agents.

However, the order has drawn sharp criticism from Senate Democratic Leader Julia Kirt, who called it “politics over people.” Kirt pointed out that current programs like SoonerCare already require proof of citizenship or immigration status. She warned that the new order could deny essential benefits to qualified children, putting vulnerable families at risk.
