Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt has taken a hardline step to restrict welfare access for undocumented immigrants by signing an executive order that demands state agencies intensify immigration-status verification for welfare programs. The order specifically targets programs like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and Medicaid.

Under the directive, the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) and the Oklahoma Health Care Authority (OHCA) must use the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) system to confirm applicants’ legal status. Stitt framed the move as a protection of “the public’s hard-earned tax dollars,” insisting welfare benefits should only go to “eligible Oklahomans.”

The executive order also comes on the heels of state legislative efforts, notably House Bills 4422 and 4423 (dubbed the SECURE Act measures), which aim to tighten verification standards across state agencies.
