Palm Beach Airport to Be Renamed After Trump in Costly, Controversial Move

In a move dripping with pay-to-play optics, Palm Beach County leaders have approved renaming the nearly 80-year-old Palm Beach International Airport after former President Donald Trump. The vote follows a bill signed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and a naming rights agreement with Donald Trump Trademark Operations LLC (DTTM), the company that manages Trump’s brand.

The airport, a frequent transit point for Trump’s trips to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, will now bear his name, creating a permanent public monument to a figure whose presidency was marked by corruption, authoritarian overreach, and relentless self-enrichment. The renaming is more than symbolic: it is a business deal that will cost the county at least $5.5 million to update signage and branding, expenses county officials hope to recoup with state funds.

While Trump’s companies have agreed not to collect royalties or revenue from the sale of Trump-branded items inside the airport, a non-exclusivity clause opens the door for them to profit off airport-branded merchandise sold elsewhere. This loophole suggests the deal could still funnel money into Trump’s coffers, blurring lines between public assets and private gain.

County commissioners were warned that rejecting the agreement could lead to penalties, and supporters framed the deal as a protective measure for residents. But this rationale is thin cover for what amounts to another example of Trump’s brand leveraging public resources for personal benefit, a pattern consistent with his documented abuses of power at Mar-a-Lago and beyond.

The Federal Aviation Administration must still approve the name change, and the airport’s code is expected to shift from PBI to DJT, further cementing Trump’s imprint on the region’s infrastructure.

This decision underscores how Trump’s influence extends well beyond his presidency, embedding his name and legacy into public institutions despite widespread criticism of his record. Palm Beach County’s capitulation to Trump’s branding ambitions is a stark reminder that accountability remains elusive when corruption and self-dealing are normalized.
