Pennsylvania Man Details Inhumane ICE Detention After Eight Months in Custody
Carlos Della Valle, detained by ICE for over eight months across multiple facilities, reveals the brutal conditions and lack of rights inside the immigration detention system. His story exposes a broken system that tears families apart and disregards legal protections, underscoring the urgent need for accountability and reform.
Carlos Della Valle, a 40-year-old Mexican native and longtime Pennsylvania resident, was released from ICE custody on April 28, 2026, after enduring more than eight months behind bars in a string of detention centers across Florida and Louisiana. His harrowing experience sheds light on the cruelty and chaos inside America’s immigration detention system under the Trump administration’s continued hardline policies.
Della Valle was first detained in December 2024 while returning from a vacation in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Although initially released on bond, he was unexpectedly taken back into custody in August 2025 during a court appearance. ICE agents cited a 1997 deportation order against him for illegal entry despite a judge having previously declared him not guilty in that case.
“I believe in this country, I believe in the law. It’s so heartbreaking to see what’s happening,” Della Valle said through tears, describing the confusion and despair caused by the government’s contradictory actions and lack of transparency. “The hardest part was not having any information. Outside there is not information, inside, even less.”
During his detention, Della Valle was shuffled through 11 different facilities, including the notorious “Alligator Alcatraz” in South Florida. He witnessed firsthand the inhumane treatment of detainees, including families torn apart, and the absence of basic rights or dignity. “Many times the treatment was inhumane, and unfortunately, there are no rights. You don’t have rights,” he said.
His wife, Angela Della Valle, an American citizen, emphasized the emotional toll on their family and the importance of preparing for the worst. “Once that person is detained, there are no options,” she said. The couple has been together for 23 years and has a child, yet their family unity was not enough to shield Carlos from prolonged detention.
NBC10 Philadelphia reached out to ICE and the Department of Homeland Security for comment on Della Valle’s case and the conditions he described but received no response by publication time.
Carlos Della Valle’s ordeal is not an isolated incident but emblematic of a broader pattern of ICE abuses, lack of oversight, and disregard for human rights. His story demands urgent attention and accountability as the government continues to expand a for-profit detention system that thrives on cruelty and confusion.
For families like the Della Valles, the fight for justice and legal status continues amid a system that too often treats people as disposable. This is a stark reminder that behind every statistic are lives shattered by a broken immigration enforcement regime.
