Pennsylvanians Demand Answers on ICE Detention, Data Centers, and Broken Promises

Pennsylvanians are fed up — and they want their elected officials to explain themselves. In a recent survey conducted by The Keystone newsletter, residents from across the state submitted the one question they’d ask any Pennsylvania politician. The responses lay bare a host of urgent issues, from the Trump administration’s push to expand ICE detention centers in the state to the unchecked growth of water-guzzling data centers, and the persistent failures in education and infrastructure funding.

One of the most pointed questions came from Philadelphia’s Beverly Rolfsmeyer, who demanded, “How do you plan to stop the proposed ICE detention centers from being developed by the Trump administration here in Pa., including closing the Moshannon Valley Detention Center already in use?” This question strikes at a broader pattern of authoritarian overreach and human rights abuses that have defined ICE operations nationwide. Communities in even red states have successfully blocked similar detention centers — yet Pennsylvania’s officials remain silent or complicit.

Environmental concerns also loom large. Margarete Emery of Montgomery County asked about the statewide plans for data centers, highlighting their massive water and electricity consumption amid growing drought conditions. Others questioned why residents near these facilities won’t be guaranteed clean water and stable electricity, or why data centers aren’t required to pay their fair share of utility costs. The public’s skepticism is clear: “If these Data Centers are as harmless and wonderful as you would like us to believe, which one of you will live right next to it?” challenged Colleen from Wellsboro.

The survey also exposed deep dissatisfaction with political leadership and broken promises. Showandah Terrill of Townville called out Senator John Fetterman for allegedly deceiving voters by running as a Democrat while voting with Republicans. Mike Finley of Bryn Mawr echoed this sentiment, questioning whether Fetterman’s progressive stance was genuine or opportunistic. This distrust is emblematic of a broader crisis of accountability and integrity in Pennsylvania politics.

Other pressing issues raised include the state’s failure to adequately fund schools without overburdening property taxpayers, the lack of cost-of-living adjustments for injured workers, and the inequities in healthcare access under the Affordable Care Act. Residents are tired of vague answers and empty promises.

These questions are more than just complaints — they are demands for transparency, accountability, and real solutions. Pennsylvania’s elected officials would do well to listen, because the public is watching closely. The stakes are high: from civil rights violations tied to ICE to environmental sustainability and the future of public education, the people of Pennsylvania are ready to hold their leaders accountable.
