Pentagon Cancels Hegseth Briefing as US Strikes Iran's Oil Hub

The Pentagon canceled Secretary of War Pete Hegseth's Tuesday press conference without explanation late Monday, just hours before US forces began striking Kharg Island, the Iranian facility that handles roughly 90% of the country's oil exports.

Pentagon officials provided no reason for the abrupt cancellation. Hegseth and Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have held regular press briefings since the US began military operations against Iran on February 28.

The strikes on Kharg Island come as Trump's latest deadline for Iran expires at 8 p.m. ET Tuesday. The president has demanded Iran reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the critical waterway through which over one-fifth of global seaborne oil flows annually. Iran has previously stated that attacks on Kharg Island would cross a red line.

Trump posted a characteristically unhinged message on Truth Social: "A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don't want that to happen, but it probably will."

Multiple reports indicate the strikes targeted military installations on Kharg Island rather than oil infrastructure directly, though the distinction may prove academic given the facility's strategic importance.

A Pattern of Deception

It remains unclear whether the canceled briefing was intended as misdirection or whether battlefield developments prompted the change. The Trump administration has repeatedly used deception tactics during the Iran conflict.

In early March, Secretary of State Marco Rubio canceled a planned Israel visit after Operation Epic Fury attacks began. CIA Director John Ratcliffe recently confirmed the agency used "deception techniques" to rescue two crew members from an F-15 Strike Eagle shot down over Iranian airspace last week.

Hegseth himself has joked about manipulating the "Pentagon Pizza Report," an X account that tracks food deliveries near the Pentagon to predict military operations. "Some Friday night, when you see a bunch of Domino's orders, it might just be me on an app, throwing the whole system off," he told Fox News in February.

Deadline Extensions and Failed Diplomacy

Trump announced a pause on attacks against Iranian energy infrastructure last month, claiming progress in negotiations. He has repeatedly extended his deadline for Iran to comply with his demands, with Tuesday's 8 p.m. cutoff being the latest.

The president recently claimed that special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner made progress during negotiations with the Iranian regime. Those claims now appear hollow as US strikes resume against one of Iran's most critical facilities.

Iran has named Kharg Island as a red line precisely because of its importance to the country's economy. The facility serves as the primary export terminal for Iranian oil, making it both strategically vital and symbolically significant.

Briefings as Victory Laps

Hegseth and Caine have used their regular press conferences to tout American military successes during the conflict. On Monday, Hegseth joined Trump to discuss the rescue operation that recovered the two F-15 crew members shot down over Iranian territory.

The abrupt cancellation of Tuesday's briefing suggests either operational security concerns or a desire to avoid questions about the escalating conflict as Trump's deadline expires. Neither explanation reflects well on an administration that has repeatedly promised transparency while conducting what amounts to an undeclared war.

The strikes on Kharg Island represent a significant escalation, targeting infrastructure Iran has explicitly warned would trigger severe retaliation. Whether Trump's apocalyptic rhetoric about civilizations dying represents genuine intent or negotiating bluster, the consequences for regional stability and global oil markets are very real.
